“When the plans for Hitachi's Ashford site were being drawn up, it was imperative that the site was not only secure against unwanted visitors, but that it also allowed Hitachi to have the ability to monitor and control the site in a manner that interfaced with our operational requirements.

Working closely together with Taylor Technology the system that has been installed has achieved and in many cases surpassed our expectations. The systems have not only achieved the requirements in the security department, but also in the ability to make the workforce feel safe in the knowledge that they can carry out their roles in a controlled and protected environment.”

Hitachi Rail Case Study

Background

Hitachi Rail Maintenance (UK) Ltd, based in Ashford, Kent, and Taylor Technology Ltd have worked closely in designing and installing the CCTV, access control, gate control and video intercom systems for the security requirements at Ashford T & RS Depot.

System Overview

The installed CCTV system consists of 23 static-type internal cameras. The cameras themselves are manufactured by Samsung and the lenses by Pentax, giving very high quality images. All of the store areas, offices and the maintenance shed are covered by CCTV to monitor the site for security, tracking and control of depot staff, contractors and visitors. Control of the system is operated with Vision Systems' Adpro Fastrace Digital Recorder Unit, with Adpro Gold as the operating software platform.

The Access Control System that has been installed comprises 46 doors, all being proximity type door readers with electronic locking devices, emergency override and hydraulic door closers. Control of the system is governed by Bewator Co-Tag at two separate workstations, these being situated in the reception and the operations centre. This allows visitors, staff and contractors to be enrolled on the site with photographic ID user cards, which allow access to be granted at only allocated locations. The system also allows the operator to easily check and verify staff movement around the depot.

The video entry system consists of external doors, vehicle gates, pedestrian gates and other access points that are manufactured by BPT. All units are vandal resistant and have video/audio integration. The access is approved by either reception or operations staff from the two installed porter's switchboards. The system also has the capability of expansion on all areas of the system, including remote audio monitoring options.
